Special Issue on AI-empowered Smart Grid Technologies and EVs

The special issue “AI-empowered Smart Grid Technologies and EVs” is an informative compilation of modern research, delving into the fascinating world of AI technologies and their diverse roles. This collection, which includes a wide range of studies, approaches, and applications, emphasizes the critical role of AI-powered grids in various sectors.

The electric power grid is undergoing substantial transformation due to rapid advancements in renewable energy technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, etc. Developing smart electrical grids is critical for successfully integrating renewable energy sources into power networks. However, designing and operating a smart grid that includes renewable energy sources is daunting for both the power and computing industries. This challenge is primarily due to the intermittent and dispersed nature of renewable energy sources, the multidisciplinary approach required for renewable energy systems, and the extensive use of advanced technologies in smart grids, including energy management and route optimization for electric vehicles (EVs). Furthermore, the future energy landscape will likely become more participatory, allowing energy consumers to function as customers and providers. This movement is reminiscent of the internet’s revolution of the computer industry, which moved from the mainframe computer model to today’s distributed and parallel computing environments. As a result, further research is required to solve developing concerns while maintaining the IoT-enabled power grid’s operational stability, cyber security, and reliability.

This special issue focuses on current improvements in intelligent electric power grids that may handle more renewable energy in utility systems and energy management for EVs and route optimization. The Special Issue focuses on renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and wave energy. It delves into various aspects of sustainable energy generation, such as predicting sustainable energy production with AI, controlling sustainable energy to support grid frequency and voltage with IoT and AI, assessing the impact of sustainable energy generation on net load variability, and calculating the capacity credit associated with sustainable energy generation. From a grid viewpoint, the Special Issue discusses essential concerns such as rising renewable energy penetration and cyber security challenges with blockchain. It includes the necessity for dispatchable power reserves in a variety of situations, as well as potential system dependability issues.
